He has variously as a dare devil, tenacious, fast, skilful and possessing a unique sense of judgment 2004, Daniel Muturi stamped his authority of the motor cross sense to confirm the status as the new kid on the block.
The Hill Crest student was in a class of his own as he own two titles in the 125cc and Open classes. Last year he added another collection to his silver ware as he was adjudged the most promising sports personality of the year.
It was the strong opposition Muturi demolished in ascending to the top 2004 that distiquished him as a rear talent. Season riders like rally ace Ian Duncan and Athony Nielsen were left gasping in his wake.
‘It was a fantastic season (2004). The titles I won were a morale booster to my career and I would like to add that my opponents were up to the task, Muturi said after his fantastic performance.
The 17 year old Muturi won a fierce wheel to wheel rivalry in the 125cc class and the open class for bikes of 250cc and above in rear display of speed. He produced his blest form when it mattered most to pick 575 and 487 points to win the categories. Duncan (2003 motor spots personality of the year) trailed with 371 and 363 points respectively. Muturi’s performance in 2004 was not surprising since he had been threatening leaders in this categories since 2001. He got close in 2003 when he emerged runners-up in the 125cc class.
I knew that 2004 was going to be tough and challenging all the top ridders were in top gear but I guess I had done my homework pretty well apart from having some luck he said. At the start of the top class competition Muturi showed glimps of his talents when he dominated the junior categories for tweo years 1998 and 1999. This performance earned him a slot in the Kenyan team for the African motorcycle union challenge. Two outings in Zimbabwe in 1998 and another in Morocco in (1999) were well off his talents as he returned credible resultants. From 2000 he was a regular feature in the top five in the Senior categories as he continued with his ascends.
It did not come as a surprise when he finally realized his dream by winning the East African Motor Sports Club trophy last year. The Kenya motor sports foundation also recognized him in the same season as the most promising talent on the motor cross scene.
By picking him the most promising Sports personality the SOYA judges left no doubt that the young Muturi had a great future ahead of him. The judges also picked him second run-up in the sports man of the year category. “I was overwhelmed by the judges decision”, he said of the awards.
These were well deserved accolades for a rider whose seemed to get better with every race in the two senior categories. In all of his competitions, Muturi displayed lightening speed a unique poise and a perfect calculation in a sport that requires perfect balancing.
When it it comes to a good sense of calculation and anticipation, Muturi had all. He was resilient staying calm when under intense pressure from his rivals. He rides with tact staying focused as demolished opposition in his class.
